Rambis finally out as Timberwolves head coach

MINNEAPOLIS (Sports Network - www.sportsnetwork.com) The Minnesota Timberwolves relieved head coach Kurt Rambis of his duties on Tuesday afternoon.

Rambis spent the past two years guiding the Wolves, who had the worst record in the NBA this past season at 17-65. It was a slight improvement from the previous year, as the team was just 15-67 in 2009-10.

"It is always hard to make these decisions," said David Kahn, Timberwolves president of basketball operations. "It is especially hard when it involves somebody of Kurt's reputation. Even so, this is the right time for us to make a head coaching change now that we've identified our roster and its specific needs."

Before joining the Wolves, Rambis had been an assistant with the Lakers for 10 seasons. He helped the team to NBA titles in 2002 and 2009, and also compiled a 24-13 record as interim coach during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 campaign following the dismissal of Del Harris.

Rambis played nine seasons with the Lakers and was a member of four NBA title teams in Los Angeles. He also spent time with Charlotte, Phoenix and Sacramento in a 14-year NBA career.
