Afternoon State Sports Briefs: NBA announces 2011-12 schedule despite lockout
Wisconsin Sports-- The NBA announced its schedule for next season today – even though the exercise could be futile if the owners’ lockout drags on. Assuming the season starts on time – and that’s a big “if” – the Bucks would play their first two games on the road at San Antonio on November second and Charlotte on the fourth.

The Bucks normally open their home schedule on a Saturday night, and this year would be no exception. They would entertain the New York Knicks on November fifth. Milwaukee would also be home-for-the-holidays. Four-of-their-last-five games in December are at the Bradley Center. The defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks would make their only Milwaukee appearance of the season on December 17th. Kobe Bryant and the Lakers would have their only Bradley Center contest on January 28th – and both the Mavericks and Lakers’ games would be on Saturday nights. Milwaukee would play 12 of its 16 January contests on the road. But six-of-their-final eight games in April would be at home – which could make a difference if a playoff berth is on the line.
But again, this all assumes a lockout would be over by this fall. The last NBA lockout was in the 1998 season, and they ended up playing 50 games starting in February. This time around, there have been no negotiations since the lockout began on July first.

Three teams will be inducted into the UW-Superior Athletic Hall-of-Fame this fall, along with 10 players-and-coaches. The 1999 men’s hockey squad will be among those enshrined on October first – along with the 2002 softball and the 1963 wrestling squad. Four athletes will going into the Yellow-jacket Hall-of-Fame – Roger Prescott in basketball and track, Sarah Anderson in track and cross country, James Young in swimming, and Sara Tarasewicz in softball. Four others will be inducted for their coaching success at Superior – Joseph Vitcenda, Jim Stephenson, Jeff Mumm, and William Morrin. Curt Hammerbeck and Leo DeCicco will be honored for their service and contributions to the school.

The Class-“A” Midwest League has the night off. The Beloit Snappers moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Western Division, after crushing West Michigan 16-3 at home yesterday. The Snappers, Kane County, and Quad Cities are all 13-10 in the season’s second half. They’re a game ahead of Clinton, and four games ahead of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – who enjoyed a 9-3 home rout of South Bend yesterday. Brewers’ prospect Brooks Hall had a no-hitter through six-and-two-thirds innings in that game for Wisconsin. He ended up allowing a run on two hits and a walk, with a career-high six strikeouts, in seven frames. Play resumes tomorrow in the Midwest League, and Thursday in the Northwoods League. That circuit had its All-Star Game last night in Wisconsin Rapids, with the North Division beating the South 6-3.

Andrew Multerer has been named the new men’s-and-women’s swimming coach at Carroll University in Waukesha. He replaces Joanne Brandtien, who resigned at the end of last season. Multerer has been an assistant at both the college and high school levels after he starred on the UW-La Crosse swim team from 1998-through-2002. Most of his coaching tenure was at Hartford Union High School. He was an assistant at Carroll in the 2010 season.
