Brewers back in first after beating D-Backs, but Gomez breaks collarbone

PHOENIX - The Milwaukee Brewers are back in first place in the National League Central after a 5-to-2 victory at Arizona in 10 innings last night. But it was a costly win, as center-fielder Carlos Gomez broke his left collarbone while making a diving catch.
Manager Ron Roenicke said Gomez would probably be out at least a couple months. The injury occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning – and on the play before that, Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew broke an ankle while sliding into home plate. Drew had doubled for his 750th career hit – but now, he’s out for the season. Roenicke said the Gomez injury was unfortunate, but he said the diving catch probably saved the victory.
The Brewers were up 2-0 in the eighth when Willie Bloomquist tied it with a two-run double. In the ninth, Justin Upton doubled and went to third on a wild pitch with nobody out. But then the Brewers brought in left-fielder Ryan Braun for a five-man infield, and got two batters to ground out before a fly ball sent the game to the 10th. That’s when Nyjer Morgan, Braun, and Rickie Weeks all had RBI singles off Ryan Cook, who was making his big league debut after being called up from Double-“A” Mobile.
Cook only faced four batters and was tagged with the loss. Takashi Saito got the win after pitching the ninth. He’s now 2-1. John Axford threw a scoreless 10th for his 23rd straight save conversion, and his 26th of the season. Braun fell a triple short of the cycle – and he almost hit a second homer that was ruled a foul ball after the umpires reviewed the replay.
The Brewers have now four-of-their-last-five, with a half-game division lead over Pittsburgh and two over Saint Louis. The Brewers will close out their series at Arizona tonight. Right-hander Zack Greinke will start against Diamondbacks’ right-hander Ian Kennedy.

The Brewers are showing new signs of life on the left side of their infield. But trade rumors persist to find replacements for shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and third baseman Casey McGehee. Until now, both have been in season-long slumps. Media reports say the Brewers are interested in veteran utility infielder Jamey Carroll from the Los Angeles Dodgers, as well as Houston shortstop Clint Barmes. But Betancourt and McGehee are both on hitting sprees during Milwaukee’s current 11-game road trip – and manager Ron Roenicke says he feels better about both players. McGehee went 6-for-19 in the first six games of the trip with two RBI’s. Betancourt was 6-for-15 in that stretch – and he homered twice on Tuesday night. With 10 days to go before the non-waiver trade deadline, Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin says there’s not much happening at the moment – but that could change at any time.
