GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will start their training camp on Friday. And the first public practice will be Saturday night with no pads or helmets. Team president Mark Murphy announced a general timetable yesterday, after an NFL players’ committee approved a new collective bargaining agreement that ended the nearly five-month owners’ lockout.
The full training camp schedule won’t be announced until today at the earliest. But Murphy said most practices would likely be at night, considering the compacted schedule. He said two-a-day practices are now what he called “dinosaurs,” because most players come to camp in shape. Under the terms of the new agreement, a practice in full pads is not allowed until the fourth day of camp – and that won’t be until next Monday.
Murphy said the Packers would still have their annual “Family Night” on Saturday, August sixth at Lambeau Field. Murphy also said he hopes the Packers can schedule a visit to the White House next month to meet President Obama as the defending Super Bowl champions. The Packers will not miss any games – including their exhibition opener on August 13th at Cleveland.
Meanwhile, a fast-and-furious contract signing period begins today for rookies. Teams can negotiate with free agents, but they cannot start signing them until Friday. Packers’ running back John Kuhn told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he’ll test the free-agent waters – but he hopes the Packers call him first today.
