Expos win three in a row to clinch playoff berth, first in 10 years
Needing to win two out of three games in the St. Croix Valley League last weekend to clinch a playoff spot, Elmwood not only won all three, but did so by a combined score of 27-6.
ELMWOOD - Needing to win two out of three games in the St. Croix Valley League last weekend to clinch a playoff spot, Elmwood not only won all three, but did so by a combined score of 27-6.
The Expos first crushed Hager City Friday evening at Brown Field 13-1. Brett “Boomer” Keyes pitched all seven innings of the seven-inning contest.
Elmwood followed up this win, despite a short turnaround, with a resounding 18-1, seven-inning pounding of Plum City at home Saturday.
The Expos scored one in the bottom of the first, and the Blues responded with a run in the top of the second. The home team grabbed the lead back with a run in the bottom of the second and in the bottom of the third a decade’s worth of frustration exploded as Elmwood put up an 11-run inning to make their way to the postseason.
Every Expos who played recorded a hit against PC, a grand total of 17. Keys and Adam Churchill both had four hits in the game while Jonah Lansing, Eric Konsela, Jason Mountin and Mike Blizel also had solid showings at the plate vs. the Blues. Winning pitcher Dylan DeMotts recorded 10 strikeouts to notch his seventh win of the season.
Elmwood won its closest game of the weekend 6-4 Sunday at home over New Richmond. Pitching proved itself again a key reason for Elmwood’s success as winner Ryan Speltz tossed a gem with 11 recorded strikeouts. Churchill drove in four runs and Konsela belted hit a two-run homer in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 early on.
