Morning State Sports Briefs: Suter, Chelios to be inducted in U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame
Wisconsin Sports-- Two former Wisconsin Badgers are among five players to be inducted into the U.S Hockey Hall-of-Fame. Gary Suter and Chris Chelios were teammates in Madison in the early 1980’s – and both went on to long and successful pro careers.
EVELETH, Minn. - Two former Wisconsin Badgers are among five players to be inducted into the U.S Hockey Hall-of-Fame. Gary Suter and Chris Chelios were teammates in Madison in the early 1980’s – and both went on to long and successful pro careers.
Chelios played 26 years in the NHL, beginning in 1983 with the Montreal Canadiens and ending in 2010 with a brief stint in Atlanta. The 49-year-old Chelios played most of his career with Chicago and Detroit. And he’s the all-time leader in games played by an NHL defenseman with 16-hundred-51. Suter played 17 years in the pros, scoring 844 career points. Suter played for 10 seasons with Calgary, and he also spent time at Chicago and San Jose. Both will be inducted this fall in Chicago, along with player Keith Tkachuk, play-by-play announcer Mike “Doc” Emrick, and Philadelphia Flyers’ owner Ed Snider. Chelios will also be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletics Hall-of-Fame on September second.

Wisconsin will have several natives competing in the U.S. Amateur golf championship that starts August 22nd at Erin Hills, northwest of Milwaukee. Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay won a 36-hole qualifying event yesterday at the Milwaukee Country Club. Schultz shot a one-over-par 141 for his two rounds. Also qualifying were Troy Anderson of Paradise Valley Arizona at 142, and Tom Halla of Colgate at 143. Meanwhile, David Christian of Oconomowoc won a U-S Amateur qualifying event yesterday in Kenosha, along with Andrew Wyatt of Lake Forest, Illinois. Both shot seven-under-par 137’s. Jonathan Garrick of Atherton California was the third qualifier from Kenosha at five-under. His parents own a summer home on Lake Delavan.

Wisconsin’s two boxers at the U.S. Olympic Trials are one loss away from being eliminated. Milwaukeeans Luis Feliciano and Luis Arias both lost yesterday in their semi-finals in the winners’ bracket. Feliciano lost to top-seeded Joseph Diaz Jr. of El Monte, California, 14-10 in the 123-pound weight class. At 165, Arias fell to third-seeded Antoine Douglas of Burke Virginia 27-12. Feliciano and Arias were both sent to the challengers’ brackets. They’ll have to win three more bouts to reach the finals, and then win twice more to make the U.S. Olympic squad for next year.
