Wisconsin Sports-- A storm and a visit to the White House will mean fewer practices for Green Bay before the season kicks off.
GREEN BAY - A storm and a visit to the White House will mean fewer practices for Green Bay before the season kicks off.
Coach Mike McCarthy had planned out 22 practices, but now there will only be 20, the least under his guidance. An intrasquad scrimmage was cancelled Saturday night when storms came blowing in. The team will be in Washington on Friday. McCarthy says the team is spending double the time doing walk-throughs in the gym.
Offensive linemen may be the hardest hit by the new collective bargaining agreement that puts a harsher limit on workout padding. The new health-related provisions allow only 14 padded practices during regular season and one a week in the first 11 weeks. Adjustment by the coaching staff at Green Bay could prove significant as Mike McCarthy has become known for using the term "pad level" often.

University of Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema emerged from his team's first pre-season camp session talking about the results of off-season work in the weight room. Bielema was positive about the first on-field work by transfer quarterback Russell Wilson. The team is getting ready for its season opener at home against Nevada-Las Vegas. Bielema said his players were being encourage to speak loudly, saying communication will be very important to a successful season. No practice for the Badgers Sunday as they instead took part in the team's media day activities. While head coach Bret Bielema spent time answering media questions, the players posed for pictures and headshot videos. They also participated in the 'Ask the Badgers' series. The Badgers expect defensive lineman Jordan Kohout to be back at practice today. Kohout has been suffering from an injured
hamstring.

Marquette University's men's basketball program has gotten a commitment from a power forward from Chicago. Steve Taylor is a 6'9" star from Chicago Simeon High School. He's the third member of the Marquette recruiting class
for 2012. Taylor joins Jamal Ferguson of Virginia and T.J. Taylor, a
junior college transfer from Paris, Texas. Taylor is considered by
scouts to be the number-one high school senior in Illinois.

Former University of Wisconsin distance runner Gwen Jorgensen finished second in yesterday's London triathlon qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. Britain's Helen Jenkins finished first, seven seconds ahead of Jorgensen, on the course that will be used for next summer's Olympics. Jorgensen picked up the silver medal just 18 months after competing in her first-ever triathlon. American Sarah Groff also qualified by finishing seventh.
