MADISON - One of Wisconsin’s best high school basketball guards has turned down 15 scholarship offers, and will be a preferred walk-on for the University of Wisconsin starting next fall.
Zak Showalter of Germantown was an All-State first-team selection this past spring, after he averaged 19-and-a-half points a game in his junior year. He also had a team-high 106 assists in 26 games.
Zak’s father Steve told the Wisconsin State Journal that Zak always wanted to be a Badger for as long as he has played. Steve is also Zak’s high school coach – and he said UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee were among the schools offering scholarships. But Steve Showalter said Badgers’ coach Bo Ryan could not offer his son a scholarship at the UW – not right away, at least. But he said Ryan wanted Zak Showalter in the Badger program.
Showalter's father played for Ryan while attending UW-Platteville.
