NEW YORK - Putting more distance between themselves and the rest of the National League Central Division, the Milwaukee Brewers waited out a rain delay and beat the New York Mets 6-1 Friday night.
Shawn Marcum picked up his 11th win in 14 decisions. Prince Fielder knocked in two runs and Casey McGehee two more as Milwaukee won for the 20th time in its last 23 games. The Brewers hold a season-high lead of seven and a half games over the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. They dropped an afternoon game to the Cubs, 5-4 in 10 innings.
Announced attendance for the game was 24,470 but only a couple thousand were still in the stands when the action finally ended. The rain delay was almost three hours. Prince Fielder stirred things up when he confronted Mets relief pitcher Tim Byrdak after he'd buzzed the big first baseman with an inside pitch. Ryan Braun was kicked out of the game after being called out on a pitch in the third inning.
