Saturday State Sports Briefs: Expansion again on Big Ten's horizon

Wisconsin Sports
-- The Big Ten Conference says it isn't looking at another expansion right now. However, that could change.

CHICAGO - The Big Ten Conference says it isn't looking at another expansion right now. However, that could change.

Just this week Texas A&M confirmed it is interested in leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. If that happened, conferences would start scrambling to realign once again. The SEC has indicated its door is open to expansion, but it also didn't welcome Texas A&M right now. The Big 12 just lost Nebraska to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-12. Conference officials say if Texas A&M left, the league would immediately look to add anywhere from one to three schools. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany says the conference is comfortable with its current setup. Speaking yesterday, Delany said the conference has closed down active expansion efforts and isn't seeking new members.

Wisconsin’s high school football season began last night, one week earlier than normal. The purpose is to give playoff teams a break at the end of the season, so they won’t have to play three games in as little as 10 days. Training camps began August third – and for now, both coaches and athletic directors are grumbling over the new format. Ashwaubenon High School athletic director Dave Steavpack says two games will be played before classes begin in September – and that means the student crowds will be smaller than normal. For teams with two home games before school, Steavpack says it really hurts ticket revenues – especially if they’re conference games. Also, he says some schools have just four home football games – and if two of them come before the start of fall classes, those bottom lines are really in trouble. But the problem is only temporary. Next year, there will be eight regular season games instead of the normal nine – and the start of the first practice will be pushed back to August sixth.

Chicago Cubs’ general manager Jim Hendry was fired today. He spent nine years in that post. But Cubs’ chairman Tom Ricketts said the team’s performance over the last two years is not where it needs to be. Ricketts said it’s time for a fresh approach, and the new GM will come from outside the Cubs’ organization. Assistant GM Randy Bush will hold the job until a new person comes in. Ricketts said the new general manager will report directly to him – and that person will decide whether Cubs’ manager Mike Quade returns for a second full season. The 56-year-old Hendry was named the GM in July of 2002 – and he has spent 17 years in the Cubs’ organization altogether. Hendry said not many GM’s get to stay on board for nine years without winning a World Series title – so he felt he was given more than a fair chance to prove himself. Hendry said he was thankful for the way he was treated. The Cubs were 18 games below .500 going into the All-Star break just over a month ago. Today, they were 18-and-a-half games behind the Brewers in the National League Central division.

A minor league pitcher on the Milwaukee Brewers' 40-man roster has been suspended for 25 games. Mark Rogers tested positive for a stimulant in his system for a second time. He has been suspended for violating the Major League Baseball drug guidelines. Rogers was a first-round draft pick in 2004. He pitched four games for the Brewers last season compiling a 1.80 ERA. He was played for Class A Brevard County when the suspension was announced yesterday.
