The start to Elmwood's 2011 prep volleyball season got a big boost with a 3-2 non-conference win at Ellsworth Tuesday.
The Raiders won Game 1 by a 25-23 but Ellsworth took the next two games 25-16 and 25-17. Elmwood was on the verge of losing before coming back to win Game 4 by a 25-22 score and then won 15-10 in the final game.
Having more team depth has certainly helped Elmwood's cause but so has better team according to head coach Bev Glaus.
"Obviously when you can sub-in more it keep your skills from eroding due to fatigue," Glaus said. "But when you're forced to play varsity almost right away as sophomores you gain a lot of experience and its paid off for us in Games 4 and 5."
Tina McKune finished with 12 kills to lead Elmwood and McKayla Brunner had seven. Jessica Olson finished with 32 assists and Brunner also had 11 digs. Brunner also made nine block kills as well.
Elmwood has won two matches in a row and will look to make it three when they play at Fall Creek Thursday. Game time is at 7 p.m.
