SOMERSET - Since joining the Middle Border Conference in 2002, Somerset had not lost a conference game at home, ever. But that streak ended Friday as Prescott downed the Spartans 27-12 winning over Somerset for the first time in a decade.
The Cardinals stayed undefeated at 3-0 and are 1-0 in the Middle Border. Somerset, which had won a six-overtime game the week before over Bloomer, dropped to 2-1.
The Spartans certainly looked lethargic as they lost six fumbles to the Cards'. They also gave up the game's first TD on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Bryan Early to Michael Lytle for a 6-0 Prescott lead.
The game was tied at 6-6 in the second PHS's Sam Smith scored on big play, a 55-yard run from scrimmage to give the Cardinals a 13-6 halftime lead.
Prescott dominated the second half, getting a pair of one-yard Aric Sandvig TD runs set up by Somerset turnovers. With the PAT's by Owen Schommer good Prescott led 27-6 for much of the second half.
The Spartans scored on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Robert Flom to Austin Bushinger but it came at the 1:35 in the fourth quarter, too late to prevent the upset.
Somerset will try to recover at Ellsworth next weekend while Prescott will look to stay on top of the MBC as they travel to New Richmond, which also won Friday 15-14 in overtime over Durand.
