Saturday State Sports Briefs: State college football season gets underway

Sixteen Wisconsin small college football teams will open their seasons today. Defending national champion UW-Whitewater opens at UW-La Crosse – but it won’t be an official WIAC conference game. Due to budget cuts, each school in the league will play one team twice during the fall – and only one of those games will count in the standings. Whitewater and La Crosse will play again November 12th, and that will be the official conference match-up.

The Warhawks are ranked Number-One in the pre-season poll from D3Football.com. Meanwhile, other WIAC teams will have non-league opponents tomorrow. 23rd-ranked Stevens Point is at Willamette. Platteville hosts Buena Vista. Stout is at home against Black Hills State. Oshkosh hosts Central. And UW-Eau Claire plays at Bethel, Tennessee. Also, Saint Norbert of De Pere opens at fifth-ranked Saint Thomas in St. Paul Saturday. Carthage is at Carleton in Northfield. Lakeland plays at Carroll. Concordia-Mequon entertains Augsburg. Maranatha Baptist plays at Martin Luther. Lawrence is home against Saint Scholastica. And Ripon College plays at Wisconsin Lutheran.

University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema now has 50 career victories, after the Badgers’ 51-17 home rout of Nevada-Las Vegas last night. Bielema is in his sixth year at the helm, and he became the sixth-fastest Big Ten coach to reach the 50-win plateau. His teams are also unbeaten in regular season non-conference games at 21-0. Bielema needs three more to surpass Joe Paterno of Penn State for the second longest unbeaten start in Big Ten coaching history. Michigan's Fielding Yost has the long string at 41-0. Also, Wisconsin improved to 27-3 in its last 30 night games – and the Badgers have three more contests under the lights this season. Wisconsin will host Oregon State Saturday with an 11 a.m. kick-off time.

Green Bay Packers starting right guard Josh Sitton says he didn't want to explore free agency. He and the team have reached agreement on a six year contract. Terms weren't revealed. Sitton has started every game for the Packers since the start of the 2009 NFL season. The team reports he is the only player on either side of the line to be on the field for every snap of the last two seasons.
