GRANTSBURG - While everyone else was involved with conference openers, Spring Valley High School's football team held their finals non-conference contest of the regular season Friday vs. Grantsburg. SV stayed undefeated with a 30-12 beating of the Pirates.

The Cardinals put forth a better showing than they did a week ago in struggling to beat rival Elmwood. Quarterback Jon Newton threw for 147 yards on 10-of-19 passing with two touchdown catches going to wide receiver Gabe Verges of 49 and 16 yards.

Andy Bune also scored twice for SV on runs of three and 15 yards and led the Cardinals in rushing with 76 yards on 15 carries.

Spring Valley led 16-12 at the end of the first half against the winless Pirates, but dominated the second half. Grantsburg scored only on big plays, an 85-yard kick-off return for a touchdown from Joseph Gaffney after Valley's first score and a 51-yard TD pass from quarterback Daniel Larsen to Noah Hanson.

SV will play its first home game at Syverson Park Friday as they host Glenwood City.
