MADISON - University of Wisconsin football players will see a friend and mentor on the opposing sideline, when the Badgers play Northern Illinois in Chicago on Saturday. Dave Doeren ran the Wisconsin defense for the last three seasons – but he was named last December as the head coach of the Huskies.

Badgers’ senior corner Aaron Henry says Doeren remains a “father figure” to him – but while the game is being played on Saturday quote, “It’s hate between those lines.” Junior linebacker Mike Taylor says he wants to step up his game against the Huskies. And Taylor said Doeren would quote, “try and do some things against us – and we’re going to try and do some things against them.” Taylor said it should be fun. Doeren’s Huskies are 1-1. They crushed the Army 49-26 in their season opener, and lost at Kansas 45-42 on Saturday when the Jayhawks scored on a six-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass with nine seconds left.

Seventh-ranked Wisconsin is 2-0 after blanking Oregon State at home 35-0 on Saturday.

Wisconsin starting corner Devin Smith will miss an extended amount of time with an injured left foot suffered in Saturday's shutout of Oregon State. Coach Bret Bielema tweeted last night that the senior Smith will be out for awhile. Junior Marcus Cromartie is expected to start in his place. After Saturday’s game, Bielema said there was nothing broken. But Smith left Camp Randall Stadium on crutches on Saturday. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Travis Frederick is expected to return next weekend against Northern Illinois. He hurt a knee on September first against Nevada-Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, the Badgers moved up one place to seventh in the new Associated Press media poll announced yesterday. The Badgers also moved up one spot to eighth in the USA Today-ESPN coaches' poll. Oklahoma remains Number-one in both surveys.
