Tuesday State Sports Briefs: Packers put past weekend to good use

Packers had their normal meetings, weight lifting, and treatments yesterday – and practice for the next game will go from Wednesday-through-Friday. And that’s how it will be all the way through the bye week in late October. The Packers have six Sunday games in a row – with two starting at noon, three of them at 3:15, and one on Sunday night. After the bye, the Packers will play three games in 11 days – Monday night November 14th at home against Minnesota, the following Sunday against Tampa Bay at home, and the Thanksgiving contest at Detroit five days later.
McCarthy said he won’t know until tomorrow about the playing status of corner Tramon Williams, who bruised a shoulder in last week’s game. The team started making formal preparations yesterday for their next contest at Carolina on Sunday. McCarthy said he watched some of the Panthers-Arizona game at home – and he saw enough of Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton to be impressed. Newton threw for a rookie-record 422 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort. Meanwhile, Carolina linebacker Jon Beeson is out for the season after tearing his left Achilles’ against the Cardinals.

A former girls’ high school basketball coach was in jail at last word, after appearing in court on allegations that he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl three times during the summer. 54-year-old Rory McKellips of Mosinee is charged in Marathon County with three felonies – repeated sexual assault of a child, indecent exposure, and using a computer to arrange a child sex crime. Bond was set at $25,000. No date has been set for McKellips’ next court appearance. He coached girls’ basketball at Athens last season, and at Wisconsin Valley Lutheran the year before. That was after a 16-year coaching career at Mosinee in which he won a Division-Two state championship. Police quoted the girl as saying McKellips began sending her text messages in May, and he gave her gifts before having sexual contact three times in July and August. Her father reportedly found a phone McKellips gave the youngster – and police went to his workplace at Wausau Papers in Mosinee where they interviewed him and arrested him. Athens school officials had suspended him indefinitely – and he’s not under contract.

Waunakee is still in first place among the large schools in the new AP state high school football poll. Waukesha West remains second, followed by Kenosha Bradford and Verona. Monona Grove moved up one spot to fifth. All 10 teams in the poll are undefeated. In the medium school category, West De Pere is still number-one. Walworth Big Foot moved up one spot to second – and Appleton Xavier and Kewaskum are tied for third. Jefferson is at Number-five. Edgar is still the leader among the small schools. Fond du Lac Springs remains second, followed by Brillion, Lancaster, and Colby.

The Midwest League Championship Series begins tomorrow night in Lansing Michigan. The Lugnuts will host the first two games in the best-of-five series, as they play Quad Cities. Lansing won the Eastern Division crown last night with an 8-7 victory over Fort Wayne. Michael Crouse drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom-of-the-ninth. The Lugnuts swept the East Finals two-games-to-none. Quad Cities won the West Finals, after sweeping Kane County last week.

One of the world’s top sailing competitions will start tomorrow in Sheboygan. An opening ceremony is set for this evening for the International Sailing Federation’s Nations Cup Grand Final. Twenty teams from 16 countries will compete in a series of head-to-head matches tomorrow through Sunday on Lake Michigan near Sheboygan’s South Pier. Each team has three members each. City officials expect big crowds to watch the races – as well as enjoying fireworks, free concerts, a carnival, and more. It’s the first time in 16 years that any U.S. city has hosted a Nations Cup sailing final. It was held in San Francisco in 1995. The last final took place in 2009 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Sheboygan’s event organizers say they have a world-class sailing community – and they can’t wait to show it off. Sheboygan won a bid to host the Nations’ Cup over several other cities – including Chicago.
