Friday State Sports Briefs: Pack not worried about Carolina heat
Green Bay Packers’ Head Coach Mike McCarthy is not sweating the possibility of dehydration by his players on Sunday at Carolina. The Packers are practicing in 50-degree temperatures this week, while Sunday’s forecast in Charlotte calls for highs in the 70’s.
GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers’ Head Coach Mike McCarthy is not sweating the possibility of dehydration by his players on Sunday at Carolina. The Packers are practicing in 50-degree temperatures this week, while Sunday’s forecast in Charlotte calls for highs in the 70’s.
McCarthy said the Packers have dealt with warm conditions at home until a couple days ago – and had that not been the case, he might have been concerned. Carolina will make the Packers wear their dark green home jerseys so they absorb more of the heat from the sun. McCarthy says that’s fine with him. The Packers have relatively few injury problems. Corner Tramon Williams missed practice for a second straight day with a bruised shoulder. But McCarthy says there’s still a reasonable chance he can play. Rookie linebacker Vic So’oto sat out yesterday with back pain, after being a limited participant on Wednesday. Rookie tight end and special teams’ player Ryan Taylor plans to return on Sunday, after missing last week’s win over New Orleans with a hip injury.

The University of Wisconsin’s offensive line is looking to improve tomorrow against Northern Illinois in Chicago. The Badgers only had three rushing yards in the first quarter last week against Oregon State – but they improved as the game went on, and they finished with 208 yards on the ground in a 35-0 shutout. Guard Travis Frederick said the Beaver defense came across the ball differently than most defenses the Badgers play. Center Peter Konz said he never had so many cross-hits in which his opponents got inside him. Konz said the Badgers focused on better blocking techniques at practice this week, although they might not have much to worry about against Northern Illinois. The Huskies give up 278 yards on the ground per game, ranking 117th among teams in the Bowl Championship Subdivision. Tomorrow’s game starts at 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Field in Chicago. And for the first time in almost five years, the Badger game will not be on TV statewide. Time Warner Cable customers in eastern Wisconsin can get the game if they have a tier of state sports channels. Otherwise, the game will be on the Internet at ESPN3.com.

Current Badgers Carolyne Prevost, Brittany Haverstock, Stefanie McKeough, and Saige Pacholok will be at the camp – along with former Badgers Mallory Deluce, Bobbi Jo Slusar, and Meghan Mikkelson. All seven are natives of Canada. The camp will take place September 17th through 25th in Calgary.
