Sunday State Sports Briefs: Brewer bats bash Reds 10-1

Wisconsin Sports
-- The combination of the Brewers fourth win in five games and a St. Louis loss pushes Milwaukee’s magic number to five.

CINCINNATI - The combination of the Brewers fourth win in five games and a St. Louis loss pushes Milwaukee’s magic number to five.

Ryan Braun homered for the third time in the last two games and Yovani Gallardo struck out a career high 13 as the Brewers ripped Cincinnati 10-1. Yuniesky Betancourt also knocked the ball out of the park as Milwaukee got closer to a National League Central Division title. Gallardo picked up his 17th win in 27 decisions and became the second pitcher in team history to strike out four batters in one inning. Mark Kotsay drove in three with a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning. The offensive explosion ruined a night where the Reds were honoring Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench.

Both teams played close games in the opening week, but that’s where the similarities end. The Green Bay Packers are defending Super Bowl Champions who won their season opener against New Orleans 42-34. The Carolina Panthers lost for the 13th time in their last 15 games when they dropped a 28-21 decision to Arizona. Despite that, the Panthers are fairly optimistic after rookie Cam Newton tied an NFL rookie record with 422 yards passing in his first start. Newton accounted for all three Panther touchdowns last week, throwing for two and running in another. The task is a big one. Aaron Rodgers is as hot as any NFL quarterback has ever been, hitting 27-of-35 for 312 yards and three touchdowns against the Saints. And, the Panthers today will be playing without their defensive leader, Jon Beason, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
