Monday Sports Briefs: U spikers win Marquette Challenge

-- The Marquette University volleyball team lost to ninth-ranked Minnesota three-games-to-two yesterday in the title match of the Marquette Challenge in Milwaukee.

Senior Ciara Jones had a career-high 24 kills, as the Golden Eagles fell to 9-4.

The University of Wisconsin men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in Chicago yesterday against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Chris Prince scored for the Badgers in the 83rd minute. Derek Huffman evened the score in the 85th minute. SIUE out-shot Wisconsin 11-8. The Badgers are now 3-3-and-1 on the season.

The Marquette University men's soccer team won at Michigan 2-1 in double-overtime. Kelmend Islami scored the game-winner in the 110th minute, as the Golden Eagles improved to 2-4-1.

UW-Green Bay's women's soccer team won its own weekend tournament with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Dayton. Kirby Allen scored the game-winner, as the Phoenix improved to 3-2-1.

Also in women's soccer from Sunday, Marquette ended a four-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss at West Virginia. Mary Luba scored the only goal for Marquette, which fell to 11 in the Big East and 8-2 overall. West Virginia is 2-0 in league play.

Mike Heidke of Neenah won his third straight Fox Cities Marathon yesterday. The 33-year-old teacher and cross country coach ran the 26-plus-miles in two hours, 39 minutes, and 25 seconds. T.J Schmidt of Appleton placed second. Kelly McClure of Iron Mountain, Michigan won the women’s race in 2:56:05. Julie Faylona of Baraboo took second.
