MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota volleyball player Ashley Wittman of Shakopee has been named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week after leading Minnesota to two wins at the Marquette Challenge in Milwaukee on Saturday and Sunday.
Wittman was named the tourney MVP as the Gophers beat Middle Tennessee State and Marquette. This is the second time in Wittman's career that she has won the weekly award.
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has named its volleyball players of the week. Minnesota-Duluth sophomore Kate Lange of Hibbing is the league's Offensive Player of the Week. She racked up 55 kills in three wins last week. Southwest Minnesota State senior Cara Carson of Omaha is the Setter of the Week after helping the Mustangs to a pair of wins. And, Winona State senior Shannon McGowan of Naperville, Illinois is the Defensive Player of the Week after recording 45 digs in an upset win over Wayne State.
Concordia-St. Paul remains the No. 1 team in the nation in the latest NCAA Division II national volleyball coaches poll. The unbeaten Golden Bears are the defending national championship team. Minnesota-Duluth is ranked fifth in the country, while Southwest Minnesota State is No. 7 in this week's poll. Minnesota State-Mankato moved up one spot to No. 14 this week.
The weekly award winners in volleyball have been announced by the MIAC. Saint Benedict freshman Lexi Rinde of Minnetonka is the Hitter of the Week, while Concordia-Moorhead senior Amy Sykora of Rapid City, South Dakota is the Setter of the Week.
