Morning State Sports Briefs: Badgers, Huskers ranked together
Wisconsin Sports-- The University of Wisconsin football team dropped one place to seventh in the new AP media poll released yesterday. And the Badgers remained at Number-seven in the USA Today-ESPN coaches’ poll, after their 59-10 home rout of South Dakota on Saturday.

The Badgers finished their non-conference schedule at 4-0, and will host new Big Ten member Nebraska in their league opener on Saturday night in Madison. Nebraska is eighth in both polls, also at 4-0. The Cornhuskers crushed Wyoming on the road Saturday, 38-10. Badgers’ running back Montee Ball says the Nebraska game will be a huge game on a big stage – and he’s excited about it. The last time that a pair of Top-10 teams played each other at Camp Randall Stadium was in November of 1962 when No. 3 Wisconsin matched up against No. 5 Minnesota.

UW-Whitewater remains the only Wisconsin team in the national small college Top-25 from D3football.com The Warhawks are still Number-One at 3-0, with 19 first-place votes in the new poll. The defending Division-Three champions had their bye this past weekend. Mount Union of Ohio had the other six first-place votes. The Purple Raiders remain second, also at 3-0. Saint Thomas remains at No.3. UW-Platteville also received votes, as did Oshkosh, Eau Claire, and Stevens Point.

The Wisconsin women’s hockey team crushed Lindenwood of Missouri, 13-0 yesterday in Madison. The Lady Lions were playing their first games in the NCAA’s Division-One, and they were out-scored by the top-ranked Badgers 24-0 in two contests during the weekend. Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker both recorded hat tricks for the Badgers, who extended their unbeaten streak to 29 games dating back to last season. Wisconsin is off next weekend. They’ll open WCHA play on October eighth, when they host seventh-ranked North Dakota.
