No "off-year" elections in La Crosse County

LA CROSSE - This is known as an “off year” in the election cycle, but don’t tell that to the La Crosse County clerk.

Ginny Dankmeyer’s staff is handling seven elections this year, plus the recount for the State Supreme Court contest. In the odd-numbered years, most places in Wisconsin only handle the February primary and April general elections for mainly local offices. But this year, La Crosse County also had the recall primary and general election for Senate Republican Dan Kapanke’s seat. And this fall, there will be a primary and a general election to replace state Assembly Democrat Jennifer Shilling of La Crosse, because she won Kapanke’s Senate seat.

There’s been some criticism of Governor Scott Walker for dragging his feet in calling special elections when legislators leave. But the company that prints the La Crosse County ballots said they could have used more time to prepare the ballots for this fall’s contests. The extra voting has cost La Crosse County $52,000 this year. Dankmeyer figures it will run an extra nine-thousand for the votes to replace Shilling in the Assembly.
