Playoff bids in the air in prep football games tonight

Pierce County teams need to start winning football games in order to clinch playoff berths. Spring Valley, in fact, can do so tonight if they win at Mondovi. While on paper the Cardinals look to be the strong favorites at 5-1 compared to the Buffaloes' 2-4 mark. But head coach Matt Ducklow says the Cardinals are approaching the game as a difficult task to accomplish.

"They starting a lot of sophomores but they're good athletes and good players," Ducklow said "It's tough place to play and by no means is this a game we can put in the win column already simply because of our records."

Smith meanwhile will be with the Cardinals of Prescott as they travel to Durand to take one of the Middle Border Conferece's top running backs in Jake Weber and the Panthers' single-wing offense. PHS needs to win two out of its last three games to clinch a bid even with a 4-2 overall record. The Cards are also coming off a gut-wrenching 12-7 loss at Baldwin-Woodville.

"I don't want us focused on winning two-out-of-three," Smith said in a radio interview with KDWA Am 1460. "What I want us focused on is playing well, getting in good reps. and doing the right things so our play takes us where we want to go."

Ellsworth too, is in the same boat after being beaten up by New Richmond last week. But fortunately for them their opponent this week is not 5-1 Durand (although they will play them in two weeks) but winless Osceola for 7 p.m. Homecoming match-up at Fuller-Symes Field.

Elmwood and Plum City can still make the playoffs but their tasks at hand are enormous. They have to win all of their remaining game to keep their streaks alive, Elmwood starting tonight in New Auburn and Plum City at Cornell.
