MADISON - The UW-Madison football team will have to beat Nebraska without two of its defensive starters. Junior defensive end David Gilbert injured a foot this week and strong safety Shelton Johnson is expected to miss the big game, too, with a calf injury.
It’s been a while since there was a scene like this at Camp Randall Stadium. The home of the Badgers is usually filled on game day, but this one is b-i-g. When number-seven Wisconsin hosts number-eight Nebraska tonight, it will be the first time in nearly 50 years two teams ranked in the top 10 will meet at the historic stadium.
Expect a lot of red – the main color for both teams. Reports indicate up to 30,000 Cornhusker fans are headed to Madison, with or without tickets. Both teams like to run the ball. Each has 16 touchdowns on the ground, good for second-best in the nation. But, Wisconsin has opened some eyes with its passing. Transfer quarterback Russell Wilson has completed more than 75 percent of his passes, with 11 touchdowns and just one interception.
For Nebraska, it’s first-ever game as a member of the Big Ten Conference is a chance for the Huskers to make a major statement. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. local time. The Badgers have 27 wins in 30 night games in school history.

Don Baylor, the batting coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, fainted yesterday in the team’s clubhouse in Milwaukee. It happened just before the D-Backs started working out for tomorrow’s Game-One of their National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. General manager Kevin Towers said the 62-year-old Baylor felt light-headed after he stood up from the breakfast table this morning. He was still disoriented when he arrived in the Diamondbacks’ training room at the ballpark, and he passed out around 11 o’clock. An ambulance took Baylor to a hospital. Towers said EKG heart tests were good, and a CAT scan was being performed late this morning. But for now, he said everything looked good. Baylor was with the Brewers in 1990-and-’91 as their hitting coach under former manager Tom Trebelhorn. Baylor was also a special assistant to the general manager for Milwaukee in 1989.

Bob Uecker will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for tomorrow’s Brewer playoff opener against Arizona at Miller Park. The Brewers’ Hall-of-Fame radio announcer also threw the first pitch in Milwaukee’s first home game of the 2008 playoffs, the last time the Brewers made the post-season. Owner Mark Attanasio’s father Joe will sing the national anthem – just like he did at the ’08 playoffs. The Brewers are suggesting that fans arrive early for tomorrow’s 1 p.m start. The parking lots open at 10 a.m.

Both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Milwaukee Brewers could suffer a big setback tonight. The Brewers had the best home record in the majors this year, setting a team record with 57 wins in 81 games. Should they start a short series by losing on the field where they are most comfortable, it could be a major psychological setback. For Arizona, starter Ian Kennedy is the team's best pitcher, by far. No other Snake pitcher has a record near his 21 wins in 25 decisions. If he loses, Arizona will be off to a bad start. Some team is going to come out of this first NLDS contest suffering more than a single-game loss.
