MADISON - The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team will open its season this weekend with a pair of contests against Northern Michigan at the Kohl Center in Madison. Game-One is tonight, and the series finale is tomorrow night.

The Badgers went 21-16-4 overall last season. Coach Mike Eaves begins his 10th year at the UW, and he’s eight victories shy of 200 for his Badgers’ career. Wisconsin’s leading scorer, junior defenseman Justin Schultz, returns after being named the WCHA’s defensive player-of-the-year. He had 18 goals and 47 points. But Eaves is going with a pair of freshman goaltenders. And all but six of his 26 players are freshmen and sophomores. Wisconsin starts with a No.17 national ranking.

Meanwhile, the top-ranked Badger women’s hockey team returns after taking last weekend off. Wisconsin will open its WCHA schedule against No. 6 North Dakota tomorrow and Sunday afternoons. The Badgers have a 29-game unbeaten streak, after taking a pair from Lindenwood in their season openers two weeks ago.
