LA CROSSE - Four Democrats will square off tomorrow in a primary election in La Crosse – and the winner will be one step closer to replacing Jennifer Shilling in the state Assembly.

Shilling’s seat became available after she was elected to the Senate in a recall election in August. And the winner of tomorrow’s primary will run against the only GOP candidate – David Drewes – in a general election on November eighth. The four Democrats in tomorrow’s primary are La Crosse School Board president Christine Clair, County Supervisor Jill Billings, arts administrator David Krump, and conservative Democrat Nick Charles.

The district has not elected a Republican in 40 years, but UW-La Crosse professor Joe Heim says it would be a mistake for the Democrats to ignore Drewes – who’s known in the area as a government watchdog. Heim says there are no major issues that separate the four Democrats in tomorrow’s primary. He tells the La Crosse Tribune quote, “It comes down to who you like – who you’ve known longer.”
