WIAA volleyball pairings set

A potential Prescott-Spring Valley showdown will be one of the highlights of next week's regional prep volleyball tournaments if and when it takes place.

A potential Prescott-Spring Valley showdown will be one of the highlights of next week's regional prep volleyball tournaments if and when it takes place.

For it to happen No. 3 seeded Spring Valley will have to take down No. 6 seed Unity at Spring Valley and No. 2 seeded Prescott will need to beat Boyceville at Prescott this coming Tuesday in their Division 3 bracket. A Spring Valley-Prescott match-up would take place Thursday in Prescott starting at 7 p.m.

First round matches of the regional tournaments are Tuesday followed by semifinals Thursday and finals on Saturday. The top seed hosts on all levels of the tournament. There are no more separate hosts for the finals.

Grantsburg, the state's top team in Division 3 is the No. 1 seed in the regional and will host the championship game Saturday if they make it as expected. The Pirates are the state runners-up and were the champions back in 2009. They have been to state 11 times and have won the past three sectional titles.

In Division 4 Pierce County teams will also see a state-ranked opponent as a road block. No. 10 Cochrane-Fountain City is the top seed in the regionals with Elmwood and Plum City. The Blue Devils are the No. 2 seed and host No. 7 Gilmanton Tuesday while Elmwood has its highest seed in years at No. 5 and travels to face No. 4 seeded Eleva-Strum. The winner will face C-FC in the semifinals if the Pirates get past No. 8 Independence. PC will face either No. 3 Pepin or No. 6 Alma in the semifinals if they win Tuesday.

In Division 2, Ellsworth was given a controversial No. 6 seed despite its 5-2 Middle Border Conference record and will have to go on the road to face No. 3 Bloomer. If the Panthers win they will face either No. 2 Barron or No. 7 seed Durand.
