Minnesota Sports Briefs: U's Rau honored as WCHA Freshman of thre Week

-- University of Minnesota men's hockey player Kyle Rau of Eden Prairie has been named the WCHA Freshman of the Week after helping Minnesota sweep the defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs last weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota men's hockey player Kyle Rau of Eden Prairie has been named the WCHA Freshman of the Week after helping Minnesota sweep the defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs last weekend.

Rau scored three goals in the two games, pushing the Gophers to 4-0 on the season. Minnesota is now ranked No. 8 in the nation. Michigan Tech goaltender Josh Robinson was the league's Defensive Player of the Week, while Colorado College forward Rylan Schwartz was the Offensive Player of the Week.

University of Minnesota senior Stephanie Price of Mankato is the Big Ten female Runner of the Week after finishing 16th in the Wisconsin Invitational cross country meet last weekend. This is the third weekly honor for Price this season and the fifth of her career. Gopher senior Hassan Mead of Minneapolis is the men's Runner of the Week. He earned a fifth place finish at the Wisconsin Invitational. This is his second weekly citation this season and the sixth of his career.

Minnesota-Duluth junior cross country runner Cole Toepfer of Eagan is the Northern Sun Conference men's Runner of the Week after winning a meet at Crown College on Saturday. Concordia-St. Paul sophomore Becca Richter of Osseo is the women's weekly honoree after she placed eighth in the same meet. The MIAC announced that St. Thomas senior Ben Sathre of Chaska is the men's Runner of the Week in that league for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career. And, Saint Benedict freshman Bailey Drewes of Bemidji is the female Runner of the Week in the MIAC.

St. Scholastica senior safety Justin Trautmiller of Somerset, Wisconsin has been named to the D3football.com Football Team of the Week. He tied his own program record by intercepting three passes in last Saturday's 29-12 Saints homecoming victory over Westminster of Missouri. All three interceptions set up touchdown drives.

Both the University of Minnesota men's and women's basketball teams continue to go through preseason practices at Williams Arena, although the men's team did not practice yesterday. Both teams are hoping for improvement over a year ago, when both squads did not qualify for postseason play. Head men's coach Tubby Smith will be counting on the veteran frontcourt tandem of Trevor Mbakwe and Ralph Sampson III, both seniors. Meanwhile, women's coach Pam Borton has senior Kiara Buford to count on.

Ex-Twins infielder Nick Punto started at second base for St.Louis last night in game one of the 2011 World Series. Punto went one-for-two with two walks and a stolen base in the Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Rangers. Allen Craig had the go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI-single in the sixth innings for the Redbirds. Punto spent seven seasons in Minnesota and the defensive specialist was a favorite of Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire. This is his first year in St.Louis.

The regular season came to a close Wednesday night for high school football teams across Minnesota. Most students in the state have today and tomorrow off (Thurs&Fri) because of the annual state teachers conference in St.Paul. No. 2 Wayzata knocked off top-ranked Eden Prairie 9-0 last night in a battle of the big conference schools. Section playoffs begin Tuesday in Nine-man, Class One-A, Two-A, Three-A, Four-A and Five-A. Quarterfinal games are scheduled for November 11th and 12th and the semifinals are November 18th and 19th. The Prep Bowl is Friday November 25th at the Metrodome.
