MADISON - UW chancellors are crying foul over the new budget cuts they’re being ordered to take. The Administration Department said this week that the UW must take 38-percent of the $174-million in non-specified cuts which are budgeted for state agencies over the next two years.

The university system said it knew those cuts would be coming, but officials were not sure how big the hit would be. UW spokesman David Giroux said the $65-million in new cuts is disproportionate to what other agencies are being told to slash.

UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorenson said Governor Scott Walker has repeatedly talked about creating good-paying jobs – and higher education must be a key partner in that.

Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie said the cuts were totally expected, and they’re smaller than the same types of cuts in previous budgets. Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch said all state agencies should plan for larger spending cuts in the wake of new uncertainties in the economy. He said the additional spending reductions could total $300-million dollars – or $126-million more than what was included in the budget that runs through mid-2013.
