Sunday State Sports Briefs: Badger hockey teams both winners Saturday

Wisconsin Sports
-- Both UW-Madison hockey teams were victorious Saturday night with the men earning a sweep over North Dakota and the women doing the same vs. UM-Duluth.

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team scored three times in the first period and was never threatened the rest of the way, beating Minnesota-Duluth 6-3 Saturday in Duluth.

Goaltender Alex Rigsby made a career-best 46 saves, including 22 in the second period. Carolyne Prevost had two of Wisconsin’s six goals as Badgers swept the weekend series. At one point Wisconsin defender Saige Pacholok got credit for a goal when a UMD mistake sent the puck into the net. Hilary Knight, Brianna Decker and Kelly Jaminski scored Wisconsin’s other goals. The Badger record improves to 7-1 with the win.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team has swept North Dakota for the first time in five years. Wisconsin took Saturday’s WCHA conference game 5-4, moving back to the .500 mark with a 3-3 record, including 2-2 in conference games.

North Dakota took the lead early by scoring the first goal midway through the first period. Consecutive goals by Joseph LaBate, Ryan Little and John Ramage put Wisconsin up 3-1. The Fighting Sioux tied it at 3-3, but Mark Zingerle and Joe Faust gave the Badgers a lead they wouldn’t surrender. Freshman goaltender Joel Rumpel made 38 saves in his third career start to preserve the win.

Making his first start in a Camping World Truck Series race since 2009, Mike Wallace finished at the head of the pack. He won the Coca-Cola 250 at Talladega Superspeedway Saturday. Necedah's Johnny Sauter dropped from second to third in the points standings by finishing 15th. Austin Dillon is still on top, but his lead over James Buescher was cut to three points.
