Spring Valley upends field to win D-3 sectional title
The unranked Spring Valley girls' cross country team made its impact felt nevertheless at the WIAA Division 3 Fall Creek Sectional Saturday. The Cardinals won the school's first ever sectional title in cross country led by its first-ever individual sectional champion Breanna Colbenson.
FALL CREEK - The unranked Spring Valley girls' cross country team made its impact felt nevertheless at the WIAA Division 3 Fall Creek Sectional Saturday. The Cardinals won the school's first ever sectional title in cross country led by its first-ever individual sectional champion Breanna Colbenson.
Colbenson won the girls' race in 15:07, well ahead of runner-up Kenna Breckner of Colfax who ran the course in 16:41. It's Colbenson's third trip to state but this year's she'll be with friends as SV's team won the sectional title with 68 points, ahead of No. 11 Stanley-Boyd's 97 points. No. 9 ranked Eau Claire Regis finished seventh. Elmwood was 14th out of the 17 schools competing led by Heidi Webb's 50th place in 19:30.
Valley was edged out at the Dunn-St. Croix meet last week due to injuries to its tops runners. But Emma Gaustad recovered from her ankle injury last week to finish in 11th place in 17:29 followed by fellow sophomore Sophie Koch in 12th and junior Riley Bowman in 13th. These three pack finishes plus Colbenson's first place were the difference for the Cardinals. SV's other scoring runner, freshman Pearl Davis, took 32nd.
The state meet is next Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids.
Spring Valley's boys placed 12th in the meet and Elmwood was incomplete. Valley's top runner was Lance Snyder, 44th in 19:33 while James Bauer had Elmwood highest finish in 66th.
