CHARLOTTE -- Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell nailed a 31-yard field goal with just under three minutes to play, while Panthers kicker Olindo Mare missed a field goal attempt from the same distance with :29 seconds left, allowing the Vikings to hold on to a 24-21 victory at Carolina.

Minnesota's Adrian Peterson rumbled for 86 yards on the ground with a score and also hauled in a TD pass from rookie Christian Ponder for the Vikes'. Percy Harvin added a 10-yard touchdown run for Minnesota in the win.

Newton completed 22-of-35 passes for 290 yards with three touchdowns for Carolina in a losing effort. Steve Smith, Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey each found the endzone via the air for the Panthers, who have dropped four of their last five games. Both teams are now 2-6.
