Verona upset in state volleyball tournament

-- Undefeated Verona was eliminated last night in the Division 1 quarter-finals of the state girls' high school volleyball tournament. Verona ended its season at 42-1, after losing to Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels in five sets at the Resch Center.

GREEN BAY - Undefeated Verona was eliminated last night in the Division 1 quarter-finals of the state girls' high school volleyball tournament. Verona ended its season at 42-1, after losing to Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels in five sets at the Resch Center.

Divine Savior won the final game 15-12. They'll play Fond du Lac in tonight's Division-One semi-finals. Fond du Lac advanced with a four-set victory over Muskego. Burlington and Watertown will play each other in the other semi-final. Burlington eliminated Eau Claire North in four sets last evening. Watertown also needed four sets to defeat De Pere.

Play begins today in three other divisions. The Division 4 semi-finals open at 10 this morning. Hillsboro faces Burlington Catholic Central. And Wausau Newman takes on Owen-Withee. The Division-Three semi-finals begin at one this afternoon. Spencer plays Grantsburg, and Oostburg goes against Hazel Green Southwestern. Late this afternoon, the Division-Two semis will be played. Tomahawk takes on Oconto Falls. And then Walworth Big Foot plays the only defending champion in the tournament, Waukesha Catholic Memorial. Title matches in all four divisions are set for tomorrow.
