Gopher men's pucksters blank UND, women top UMD
Minnesota Sports--It was another successful night for the University of Minnesota hockey teams as the men shutout North Dakota in front of a sold out Mariucci Arena while the women topped Minnesota-Duluth 4-1 at next door Ridder Arena.
MINNEAPOLIS - It was another successful night for the University of Minnesota's hockey teams as the men shutout North Dakota in front of a sold out Mariucci Arena while the women topped Minnesota-Duluth 4-1 at next door Ridder Arena.
The Bulldogs (4-4-1 overall, 1-3-1 WCHA) led 1-0 early in the second period on a Kacy Ambroz tip-in goal. But the league-leading Golden Gophers (9-2, 7-2) tied it 1-1 later in the period on the first of two goals from senior center Jen Schoullis. Winger Sarah Erickson put Minnesota ahead for the first time at 9:11 of the third period and the Gophers added power-play and empty-net goals to complete the victory. In nine league games, Minnesota has outscored the opposition 38-9. UMD was outshot 37-21, including 32-13 the last two periods. Noora Raty earned the win in goal for Minnesota, while UMD senior Jennifer Harss took the loss. Saturday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Meanwhile the Gopher men shutout the Sioux. Both teams combined to miss 12 power play opportunities but the one that was successful went to the Gophers' Nick Bjugstad in the second period. Tom Serratore added the second goal in the third period and Kent Patterson made 24 saves. Both teams play again tonight at 7 p.m.
