MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins relieved general manager Bill Smith of his day-to-day duties and replaced him with the man he took over for. Terry Ryan, who previously served as Twins GM from 1994-2007, will take over as an interim general manager, although Ryan admits if he likes the job, he will likely get to keep it as long as he wants.
Team owner Jim Pohlad said the switch was made because of a difference of philosophies between Smith and others in the front office. Pohlad says the difference came in the scope and approach that was required for the Twins to get better.
Smith has been part of the organization since 1986 and Pohlad said the team intends to discuss an ongoing role for him with the club.
After back-to-back AL Central Divsion titles in 2009 and 2010, the Twins finished last this past season at 63-and-99.
