Minnesota men's hoops wins season opener

-- After a close first half the University of Minnesota men's basketball team pulled away from Bucknell to win its season opener 70-58 Friday at Williams Arena.

MINNEAPOLIS - After a close first half the University of Minnesota men's basketball team pulled away from Bucknell to win its season opener 70-58 Friday at Williams Arena.

The Golden Gophers were led in scoring by Trevor Mbakwe's 17 points while guard Austin Hollins finished with 13 points. Mabkwe pulled down 10 rebounds and was 9-of-13 from the free-throw line.

The Gophers outscored Bucknell 22-5 from the midway point of the second half to avoid losing their home opener for the first time in 23 years. Ralph Sampson III scored eight points and Rodeny Williams had seven for Minnesota. The Bison were led by Mitch Muscala's 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Minnesota hosts South Dakota State Monday at home. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
