Sunday State Sports Briefs: Packers looking for improvement from defense

GREEN BAY - It could be called a showdown between the best quarterback in the league, Aaron Rodgers for the Packers, and the best running back in the league, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings. But, it’s more than that. Green Bay is hoping its defense will finally slow down the other team.

The Packers are a perfect 8-0 and are leading the league with 34.4 points per game. But, the defense has been surprisingly generous, ranking in the bottom two when it comes to passing yards allowed and total yards allowed. Those defenders have given up 43 plays of 20 yards or more. Despite all the negatives, the Packers are a 13-point favorite against the 2-6 Vikings. And, they’re looking for their 10th straight win at home in Monday night’s game.

Missing four players, the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers still managed to start the season with a 71-65 win over Southwest Minnesota State. Tony Meier, Lonnie Boga and Christian Wolf were out with injuries. Starting point guard Kaylon Williams was serving a one-game suspension for a drunken driving arrest last summer. Ja’Rob McCallum and Ryan Allen scored 16 points apiece to lead the Panther who had four players in double figures. James Haarsma pulled down 17 rebounds. Though Wisconsin-Milwaukee led most of the game, the shooting wasn’t there. The Panthers hit 35 percent from the field.
