MU women's hoops edge Wisconsin 54-52

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team edged Wisconsin 54-52 last night in Milwaukee at the Al McGuire Center.

The Badgers were up by three with just over two minutes to go. Gabi Minix hit a layup to put Marquette within one -- and then Katherine Plouffe made two free throws with 1:45 left, which put the Golden Eagles in front for good. Sarina Simmons sealed the victory by hitting two free throws with five seconds left. Jade Davis made a three-pointer for Wisconsin at the buzzer.

Simmons scored a game-high 23 points, as Marquette out-shot the Badgers 35-to-31 percent from the floor. Sophomore Morgan Paige led Wisconsin with a career-high 16 points. The Badgers had a slight edge in rebounds, 34-33. Marquette improved to 2-0, while Wisconsin fell to 1-2.

The Badgers return home on Friday night to play Washington State. Marquette will host Georgia Tech on Saturday night.
