U wrestlers upset defending national champs Penn State
Minnesota Sports-- The defending national collegiate champion wrestling team was upset by No. 4 ranked Minnesota yesterday when the Golden Gophers knocked off No. 2 Penn State 23-14 at Rec. Hall.
STATE COLLEGE, Penn. -- The defending national collegiate champion wrestling team was upset by No. 4 ranked Minnesota yesterday when the Golden Gophers knocked off No. 2 Penn State 23-14 at Rec. Hall.
Minnesota's Sonny Yohn (197) and Kevin Steinhaus (285) notched key upset victories in the dual meet win. PSU had taken a 14-13 lead after a pinfall at 174 pounds but Minnesota won the next three matches in a row, including Yohn and Steinhau's victories.
The Gophers won seven of 10 nmatches. Also winning were senior Zach Sanders (125), David Thorn (133), Nick Dardanes (141), Jake Dietchler (157) and Tony Nelson (285).
PSU had taken a 14-13 lead after a pinfall at 174 pounds but Minnesota won the next three matches in a row.
The Golden Gophers will next host North Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavillion in Minneapolis
