MINNEAPOLIS -- The news is not good for University of Minnesota star basketball forward Trevor Mbakwe. Tests yesterday confirmed that he suffered a torn knee ligament in Sunday's 86-70 loss to Dayton in the Old Spice Championship game. Mbakwe will undergo surgery in about three weeks and will miss the rest of the season.
This is a big blow to the Gopher hopes this season, as Mbakwe was a preseason all-Big Ten pick, and was playing at a high level prior to the injury. He was averaging 14 points and ten rebounds per game heading into Sunday's game in Orlando.
Minnesota hosts Virginia Tech tomorrow night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Williams Arena.
