Sunday State Sports Briefs: WIAA could move state hoops tourneys from Madison

Scheduling conflicts could lead the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Conference to move its basketball championship tournaments to Green Bay or Milwaukee, possibly as soon as next season

MADISON - Scheduling conflicts could lead the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Conference to move its basketball championship tournaments to Green Bay or Milwaukee, possibly as soon as next season.

The WIAA likes to hold its tournaments the second and third weeks each March, but there are reported conflicts with the Big Ten men’s hockey conference starting in the 2013-2014 academic year. High school officials say they have no problems brewing with the University of Wisconsin. But, it is possible the boys and girls tournaments would have to move as soon as 2012-2013. Milwaukee isn’t thought to be an option, but the Resch Center in Green Bay could be. Milwaukee games could be played at U.S. Cellular Arena downtown, the former MECCA where the old WISAA state tournament used to be. Another possible Madison venue is the tourney's former location at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse. The tournaments generate millions of dollars in economic activity for the Madison area – and more than two million dollars in revenue for the WIAA. A final decision could be made next March.

The Packers beat the Giants and Detroit loses to the Saints, Green Bay will wrap up the NFC North title. It would seem to have a good chance of happening. The Packers have won 17 straight games – four short of the NFL record set by the New England Patriots. They are well-rested after a week and a half without a game. And, the New York Giants have lost three games in a row and trail Dallas by a game in the NFC East with a 6-5 record. Both teams feature strong quarterbacks, though Packer Aaron Rodgers has taken that to a whole new level. In the 11-0 start, Rogers has 33 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. On the other hand, the Giants franchise has a history of ending unbeaten seasons, doing it to Denver in 1998 and stopping the Patriots bid for a perfect season with a 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII. The Packers are six-point favorites in the game being played at MetLife Stadium today.
