Minnesota Sports Briefs: NCAA Regional volleyball action tonight at U

-- The University of Minnesota volleyball team will play in the NCAA Sweet 16 this weekend in Minneapolis. Minnesota will play Iowa State tonight at 7 pm. at the U of M Sports Pavilion.

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota volleyball team will play in the NCAA Sweet 16 this weekend in Minneapolis.

Minnesota will play Iowa State tonight at 7 pm. at the U of M Sports Pavilion. The winner will advance to Saturday's Elite Eight match against the winner of tonight's other Sweet 16 bout between Purdue and Florida State, also on the U of M campus.

The Golden Gophers rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit against nationally-ranked Washington last Saturday and claimed a 3-2 win to advance to the second weekend of play in the postseason.

The NBA lockout has officially ended. NBA players and owners approved the new collective bargaining agreement on Thursday. Training camps open on today, with the free agent and trading periods set to start at noon. The Timberwolves will open preseason play against the Bucks a week from tomorrow. Rookie Derrick Williams told reporters yesterday that he can't wait to get started.

The Minnesota men's basketball team hosts St. Peter's at Williams Arena tomorrow afternoon. The Gophers ran their winning streak to three with a 70-56 win over Appalachian State on Tuesday. Minnesota also moved to 9-1 with the win. Tip-off tomorrow is at noon.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson practiced on a limited basis on Thursday Peterson has missed the last two games due to a high ankle sprain he suffered in a loss to the Raiders on November 20th. Meantime, quarterback Christian Ponder did not practice due to a hip pointer. Ponder is questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions in Detroit.

The NFL will add eight regional combines in addition to the main one it stages each year in Indianapolis. The regional combines will start January 28th, 2012 in Los Angeles and conclude with the main combine at the end of February. Houston, Baltimore, Tampa Bay, the New York area, Chicago, Atlanta, and Cleveland are also included as regional sites. Players that attend an NFL Regional Combine may be invited to attend the NFL Super Regional Combine which will be held at Ford Field in Detroit on March 30th-31st of next year.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the University of Illinois has found its new head football coach. Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas could introduce Toledo head coach Tim Beckman as the man to replace Ron Zook as early as today. Zook was let go on November 27th after finishing the season with six straight loses, including a season-ending defeat to Minnesota 27-7. Beckman is 21-16 in three season with Toledo, including a 14-2 record in the Mid-American Conference his last two years. The Golden Gophers will play at Illinois on November 10th next year.

This is opening weekend for a number of ski resorts in Minnesota. Lutsen Mountain opens today while Giants Ridge in Biwabik and Buena Vista in Bemidji begin their seasons on Saturday. Amy Frischmon with Wild Mountain near Taylors Falls says they are already 100-percent open and have made tons of snow. Powder Ridge in Kimball currently has four runs open.
