MADISON - Two goals from senior Justin Schultz led the Wisconsin men’s hockey team to a 3-3 tie with number-one ranked Minnesota-Duluth Friday in front of over 11,000 at the Kohl Center.

That’s the third time in the early season the Badgers have faced a team ranked number one. Facing a Bulldog team that hasn’t lost in a dozen games, Wisconsin jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period. Brad Navin and Schultz put coach Mike Eaves’ squad on top.

A two-goal second period for the visitors tied the score, then a second goal by Schultz gave the Badgers a lead again. UMD tied again, at 3:22 of the third period – and neither team was able to score again. Goalie Joel Rumpel had a strong game, stopping 33 shots.

The Badgers’ record is 7-8-2, including 4-7-2 in the WCHA. The same two teams play each other Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

Pucks were flying at the Bemidji State goaltender from all angles in a 3-1 win by the Wisconsin women’s hockey team Friday at the Sanford Center.

The Badgers fired 54 shots on goal while picking up their 18th win in 19 games. The Beavers actually scored first and held the lead for six minutes. It was all Wisconsin the rest of the way. Stefanie McKeough tied the score, then Hilary Knight put the Badgers ahead 2-1. Brittany Ammerman scored an insurance goal in the final minutes. Brianna Decker assisted on McKeough’s goal, giving her at least one point in 30 straight games. The victory was the eighth this season for the Badgers against a top-10 ranked opponent.

The two teams wrap up the series this afternoon at 2 p.m. in Bemidji.
