Wisconsin Sports-- University of Wisconsin running back Montee Ball and guard Kevin Zeitler were named as first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press today.
MADISON - University of Wisconsin running back Montee Ball and guard Kevin Zeitler were named as first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press today.
Center Peter Konz was chosen as a second-team pick. Ball leads the nation with 1,759 rushing yards. He needs just one touchdown in the Rose Bowl to tie Barry Sanders' all-time record of 39 TD's in a season. And Ball finished fourth in last week's voting for the Heisman Trophy. Zeitler and Konz were key players in a Badger offensive line that helped generate almost 45 points per game.

All of Wisconsin's major college basketball teams have tonight off. But there's a good match-up in Division-Three, as the state's only two teams in the Top-25 will square off. UW-Whitewater, which is ranked 13th by D3hoops.com will play at No. 25 Stevens Point in a WIAC contest. Whitewater is 8-0 overall, while the Pointers come in at 6-2. In other WIAC men's games, UW-Stout plays at River Falls. Superior hosts Eau Claire. And La Crosse is at Carleton of Minnesota. In one other men's contest tonight, Viterbo of La Crosse is at Saint Mary's of Minnesota. On the women's side, seventh-ranked Stevens Point travels to Whitewater. 14th-ranked River Falls is at Stout. Eau Claire hosts Superior. And La Crosse plays at Saint Mary's.

And Callie Halama of UW-Eau Claire made the national women's squad. Cording, a sophomore guard, had career-highs of 25-and-30 points in back-to-back games for MSOE. And he only committed one turnover in 60 minutes of play. Halama, a junior forward, had 23 points and 11 rebounds in Eau Claire's victory over Whitewater. And she made all seven of her free throws while scoring 19 in a win over Platteville.

Two players from Wisconsin have been named to the national coaches All-American women's soccer teams for the NCAA's Division-Three. Courtney Tideman of UW-Stout and Emily Gerber of Whitewater both made the third team. Tideman is a senior defender, and Gerber is a senior mid-fielder. Both are the first All-Americans in the history of their respective programs. It's also just the fourth time in WIAC history that multiple players from the conference were named as All-Americans.

University of Wisconsin men's soccer coach John Trask has been named as the assistant for the U.S. Under-23 men's national team. He'll join head coach Caleb Porter, as the team gets ready for next year's Olympic qualifying tournament. Porter coaches at the University of Akron, and Trask says he'll teach the style of soccer that the players will enjoy and embrace. Team USA will open its Olympic qualifiers against Cuba on March 22nd. They'll also play Canada and El Salvador in the tournament's preliminary round.

Wisconsin has connections to four-of-the-15 people who've been named to the Missouri Sports Hall-of-Fame. Two former Milwaukee Brewers will be inducted, Jim Edmonds and Jamie Quirk. Former Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator Emmitt Thomas is also being enshrined along with Clyde Lear, the retired founder of Learfield Communications. Fifteen individuals and two Missouri school teams will be inducted in a ceremony on January 29th in Springfield. Edmonds played in Milwaukee in most of 2010. But he made his name with the Saint Louis Cardinals, where he made three All-Star appearances and became the first Cardinal ever to hit 40-or-more homers in a season. Quirk was a catcher for the Brewers in 1977, and he was on the American League champion Kansas City Royals in 1980 as part of an 18-year big league career. Thomas ran the Packer defense in 1999 under Ray Rhodes. And he starred as a corner with the Kansas City Chiefs for 13 years. Lear founded the Missouri-net news-and-sports network. His company produces game broadcasts and provides marketing services to 54 universities. It also owns the Wheeler News Service and the Wisconsin Radio Network.
