Saturday State Sports Briefs: Badger grids begin prepare for Rose Bowl

Wisconsin Sports
- Full-time preparation for the Oregon Ducks started yesterday in the McClain Center.

MADISON - Full-time preparation for the Oregon Ducks started yesterday in the McClain Center.

Despite the physical workout, many of the Badgers were talking about the need for mental focus. They say that’s what cost them in the 21-19 loss to TCU last Rose Bowl. There are distractions at a bowl game and there figure to be more than a few this time. Offensive coordinator Paul Chryst is interviewing this weekend for the heading coaching job with the Pitt Panthers. Head coach Bret Bielema is a finalist for the Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award. Distractions aside, most of the Badgers think they have a simple task in the search for victory – play Wisconsin Badger football. That won’t be easy against the 11-2 Ducks, but a bowl game isn’t supposed to be easy.

University of Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst is expected to be interviewed this weekend for the vacant head coaching job at Pittsburgh. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said Chryst is on a short list of candidates for a job that opened up this week when Todd Graham left to become the new coach at Arizona State. Meanwhile, another possible candidate – Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads – took himself out of the running by signing a 10-year contract to stay with the Cyclones.

Marquette University senior Calum Mallace was named to the College Soccer News men’s All-American second team. The senior from Scotland was earlier named the Big East Mid-fielder of the year. He finished his career at Marquette with 13 goals and 13 assists. Eight of his goals were game-winners.

It’s another three-game weekend for the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. They hosted Toronto last night, play at Rockford tonight and then return home to face Peoria on Sunday evening. Milwaukee has won five-of-its-last-six games overall, and they’re 8-4 at the Bradley Center – where they’ll play seven of their next nine contests. Penalty-killing is one area where the Admirals are looking to improve. They’ve given up at least one power play goal in their last eight games, despite averaging the fewest penalty minutes in the league with just under 13. Milwaukee is 15-7-0-1. Their opponents tonight, the Toronto Marlies, are 15-7-3-and-1.

Six players from Wisconsin have been named to the coaches’ All-American volleyball teams. Megan Plourde of Somerset, a junior at Colorado State, was named to the All-American third team for the NCAA’s Division-One. The other five Wisconsin players are honorable mentions. They are Danielle Carlson, Chelsea Heier, and Ciara Jones of Marquette – and Kerri Schuh and Rachel Neuberger of UW-Milwaukee.

The UW-Milwaukee women's basketball team cruised to a 79-48 home victory over Chicago State Thursday night. The Panthers never trailed as they led by 15 at the half and rolled from there. Milwaukee shot a season-high 50-percent, and it had a 46-to-23 rebounding edge. The Panthers also had 26 assists, just two short of the school record. Sophomore Courtney Lindfors had 24 points, 11 boards, and a career-high six blocked shots as UWM improved to 3-6. Janay Dockery scored 13 points for Chicago State, which fell to 1-11. Milwaukee will host Toledo on Sunday.

Four-time Olympic medalist Shani Davis won the men’s one-thousand-meters yesterday at the U.S. Speed-skating Championships in West Allis. His team was 1:08.42 seconds – just nine-hundredths of a second short of his own Pettit National Ice Center record in 2005. Brian Hansen of suburban Chicago took second. Tucker Fredricks of Janesville placed third. Heather Richardson of High Point North Carolina won the women’s one-thousand meters. Her time was 1:15.51, just one-hundredth of a second short of the Pettit Ice Center record held by Jennifer Rodriguez. The U.S. team for next year’s World Sprint Championships was set after yesterday’s competition. Davis, Fredricks, and Mitch Whitmore of Waukesha is the men’s squad. Richardson and Brittany Bowe make up the women’s contingent. Other World Cup berths will be at stake this weekend. The U.S. Championships are off today, and the races will resume tomorrow with the men’s and women’s 1500.
