WASHINGTON D.C. - Congress has approved $300-million for a host of clean-up projects along the Great Lakes in the current fiscal year. The funding is part of a larger spending bill that passed both houses last week, and is now waiting to be signed by President Obama.
Jeff Skelding of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition says the allocation is a victory for those who depend on the Great Lakes for their drinking water and jobs. The region is also expected to get over $530-million dollars in federal loans for sewage improvements.
This is the third year the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has been funded. It was given $475-million in fiscal 2010, and just under $300-million in fiscal 2011.
