Ellsworth boys win road game over rival Durand

The Ellsworth boys basketball team held off Durand Thursday for a 36-32 victory for their second win in a row in Durand's home gym.

DURAND - The Ellsworth boys basketball team held off Durand Thursday for a 36-32 victory for their second win in a row in Durand's home gym.

The Panthers (3-2, 2-1 Middle Border) got 15 points and 10 rebounds from Lemoine Steffen and hit six three-pointers to make up for a poor shooting night.

Ellsworth shot just 34 percent from the field, but went 6 of 10 from beyond the arc to knock off Durand (1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Middle Border). Durand is off to its worst start since 2008.

The Panthers forced Durand to try to play more of an interior game and the plan worked well.

“We put it on a couple of their bigger guys and took their guards out of the game,” Ellsworth head coach Cory Brathol said.

Durand cut it to one late but the Panthers held the lead by making their free throws. Ellsworth finished 10 of 19 from the line.

The Panthers also took care of the ball. Ellsworth had seven turnovers for the game.

The Panthers will place Tuesday afternoon at the Lake City Invitational.
