Disappointment for Wisconsin residents hoping for a white Christmas, but most county officials aren’t that upset. The lack of snow has saved already strapped county budgets because highway departments haven’t had to pay as much for plowing and salting roads.
Some counties are still struggling from the expenses associated with big storms last January in February. No snow in December is helping them recover.
Some tourism officials at the state Capitol are considerably less enthused. They say a lot of the winter tourism business depends on snow on the ground.

A new plowing strategy should make getting around easier for pedestrians in Green Bay. In the past, snowplows have pushed snow to the side of the road, sometimes creating big piles on curbs and sidewalks. This winter crews say they will plow the snow to the middle of the street, so it can be scooped up and hauled away. Public Works superintendent Tony Fietzer says that should make it easier for shoppers to walk, making it more shopper-friendly in the middle of the winter.
