Wednesday's State Sports Briefs: Pack looks to shore up run defense vs. Lions

Wisconsin Sports
-- The Green Bay Packers will focus on defending the run, as they get ready for Sunday's regular season finale against Detroit at Lambeau Field.

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will focus on defending the run, as they get ready for Sunday's regular season finale against Detroit at Lambeau Field.

The Packers gave up 199 yards on the ground in last Sunday night's win over Chicago. Coach Mike McCarthy called it the worst run-stopping effort in his six years in Green Bay. And the yardage was only the second-worst of the year. The Minnesota Vikings racked up 218 rushing yards against the Pack at the Metrodome in late October. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers said rushing defense is a coordinated team effort. He said things have to work together like controlling the gaps, building leverage, and making tackles. Still, the Packers could use veteran run-stopper Ryan Pickett. He has missed two games after getting a concussion two-and-a-half weeks ago. McCarthy says Pickett is getting better, but he has still not been cleared to practice.

The NFL says it will review Erik Walden's situation after his court case is resolved. The Green Bay Packers' linebacker returned to court today, in connection with his November 25th arrest for a physical dispute involving his live-in girlfriend. A trial date of February 16th was set for his misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for February 13th -- and defense lawyer Steve Richards hopes a plea bargain can be arranged by that time. Both the prosecution and defense have said they're interested in settling Walden's case before it goes to trial. The 26-year-old Walden is free on a signature bond, and he has continued to play since his arrest.
