LA CROSSE - A three-time drunk driver was charged in La Crosse County yesterday with his fourth offense. But he might not have lived to face the music, had three people not rescued him from his burning vehicle.
64-year-old Dennis Christopherson of Holmen was driving on Saturday afternoon when his pick-up truck hit a guardrail and went down a steep embankment near Onalaska. The truck landed on its top, and Christopherson was trapped inside. Trent Nelson of Holmen was heading to a store to buy lottery tickets when he saw the truck fish-tail. He and two other motorists stopped, used a cane to break a window, and then pulled Christopherson from his truck as it was going up in flames.
Nelson said he might not have been able to save the man, had the others not stopped to help. Besides his new OWI charge, Christopherson is cited for driving after his license was revoked.
